The Writing Placement Exam dictates which of these courses students enroll in to satisfy the Writing and Communication (WC) core learning goal requirement:
- College Writing (355:101) is the standard introductory composition course that meets twice weekly and is worth 3 credits.
- College Writing Extended (355:104). This course fulfills the same requirement as College Writing (355:101) because it shares the same curriculum. It is a 4.5-credit course because it meets three times weekly. The Writing Placement Exam dictates whether students would benefit from having the one extra class period a week that is characteristic of College Writing Extended.
- Exposition & Argument (355:103). This course is reserved for students in the Honors College.

Enrollment Policies
- Students will only receive credit for one of the WC-certified courses referenced above (355:101, or 103, or 104).
- Students must register for and complete composition courses in consecutive terms, with no hiatus, until they have passed 01:355:101 or 103 or 104. Once a student matriculates at SAS, all writing courses must be completed at Rutgers-New Brunswick (SAS Policy).
- Students cannot drop a WC-certified course on their own. The Writing Program cannot provide a student with an SPN to drop a course without permission from an advising dean in the student's college. Advising deans who grant requests to drop courses will contact the Writing Program directly to obtain the necessary SPN.
Prerequisites for College Writing
Students who place into College Writing (355:101), College Writing Extended (355:104), or Exposition and Argument (355:103) do not need to enroll in any prerequisite courses and will complete the WC core requirement through one of these courses alone!
Students who place into EAP I (356:155) must pass that course and EAP II (356:156) before taking College Writing or College Writing Extended.
Students who place into EAP II (356:156) must pass that course before taking College Writing or College Writing Extended.
