All Rutgers students must complete the WC core learning goal requirement via one of these courses: College Writing (355:101), Exposition and Argument (355:103), or College Writing Extended (355:104).

Beyond that, each school (SAS, SEBS, etc.) has their own additional writing requirements.

The SAS Core Curriculum requires students to complete three separate courses in Writing & Communication to fulfill the WC, WCr, and WCd core learning goals.

The Writing Placement Exam determines a student's Directed Sequence of Writing Courses. See below:

All Rutgers students must complete the WC core learning goal requirement via one of these introductory composition courses: College Writing (355:101), Exposition and Argument (355:103), or College Writing Extended (355:104). Students should not take (and will not receive credit for) more than one of these courses!

College Writing replaced Expository Writing ("Expos") as Rutgers, New Brunswick's required composition course in Fall 2023.

The Writing Placement Exam determines if a student must enroll in one of our English for Academic Purposes pre-requisite courses. See below:

  • Students who place into EAPI (356:155) need to take that course and EAPII before (356:156) proceeding to a College Writing course (355:101 or 104).
  • Students who place into EAPII (356:156) need to take that course before proceeding to a College Writing course (355:101 or 104).
  • Students who place into either College Writing (355:101), Exposition and Argument (355:103), or College Writing Extended (355:104) will complete their WC core learning goal requirement via one of these courses.

On the level of content, there is no difference! These courses share the same curriculum and thus satisfy the same core learning goal requirement (WC). That is why students only need to take ONE of these courses.

The reason they have different titles and course numbers is because:

  • College Writing (355:101) meets two times weekly and is worth 3 credits.
  • College Writing Extended (355:104) meets three times weekly and is worth 4.5 credits.

The Writing Placement Exam determines whether students would benefit from having one extra class period a week (College Writing Extended, 355:104).

The courses share the same curriculum and satisfy the same core learning goal requirement (WC). There is no reason to enroll in both courses and you will only receive credit for one of them.

Students should enroll in a course that satisfies other core writing requirements, as dictated by their school (SAS, SEBS, etc.).

The list of courses that satisfy the WCd and WCr core requirements can be found here.

This version of the College Writing course is reserved for students in the Honors College.

Because students complete the WC core learning goal requirement through this course, they do not need to (and should not) take College Writing (355:101) or College Writing Extended (355:104).

The Writing Placement Exam determines whether students need to take this course and EAPII (356:156) before proceeding to College Writing (355:101) or College Writing Extended (355:104).

This introductory composition course is for learners of English as an additional language and is worth 4.5 credits. It also satisfies the AHq core learning goal requirement.
