All SAS students must complete both the Discipline-Based Writing and Communication (WCd) requirement and the Revision-Based Writing and Communication (WCr) requirement. Most other schools also have a second writing requirement, although specific requirements vary. Please click on the links below for information about each school’s writing requirements:

- School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) students must complete WC, WCd, and WCr core requirements.
- School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) students must complete WC and WCd core requirements.
- Mason Gross School of the Arts (MGSA) students typically need a second writing requirement, depending on their concentration.
- School of Engineering (SOE) students must take four humanities/social sciences electives. SOE's list of approved electives in that subject area, including Writing Program courses, can be found here.
- Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy students may take a Writing Program course to satisfy their additional writing requirements; see their curriculum page and the list of approved courses here.
- Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-New Brunswick students must complete the WC, WCd, and WCr core requirements.
- School of Communication and Information (SC&I)

SAS policy indicates that no single course can satisfy both the WCr and WCd requirements. According to the SAS Core FAQ:
“Courses may be applied to multiple learning goals, as long as they are applied to different requirements. The following combinations cannot be satisfied with the same course:
WCr and WCd: two different classes must be taken to complete the Revision- and Discipline-based Writing and Communication learning goals. Even if you take a class that is on both the WCr and WCd lists, you still need at least one course that meets WCr and at least one course that meets WCd. The Writing and Communication requirement specifies that THREE classes must be completed, including College Writing and two additional classes (9 credits).
