Writing Program Contacts

Dr. Nicole Houser is the Director of the newly established Rutgers English Language Institute (RELI), within the English Department’s Writing Program. RELI houses all divisions dedicated to scholars who use English as an additional language: Intensive English @RELI, English for Academic Purposes, and Graduate ELL. Dr. Houser specializes in applying critical and contextualized approaches to the curricular development of First Year Writing, English as an Additional Language (EAL), and World Language programs. She has written and taught courses for all levels of learners of English and Spanish, as well as Introduction to Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Translation, Intercultural Communication, and special topics courses on language ideologies and linguistic discrimination in the United States. Prior to arriving at Rutgers, Dr. Houser redesigned the First Year Writing curriculum for multilingual learners at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, where she also served as Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. At Rutgers, Dr. Houser led the curricular redesign at RELI, reframing each program toward a translingual and inclusive model, developing cross-linguistic and cross-cultural programming with key partners such as the Language Engagement Project (LEP) and Rutgers Global. Dr. Houser has given numerous presentations on culturally responsive and inclusive pedagogy and how the critical examination of language is central to interrogating, challenging, and transforming historically exclusionary policies and practices in higher education. Her current research focuses on developing collaborative curricula and institutional programming toward linguistic diversity and social justice, and she currently serves as the co-director of the Language and Social Justice Initiative.
