Your first and second paychecks can be picked up in person from MU 107 between 9am and 5pm on the Friday of each pay week. An account verification receipt (test stub) will be attached to your second paycheck. Please verify that the bank routing number and your account number are correct. If these numbers are correct, your check should be automatically deposited the next time you are paid, and your pay stub will be in your mailbox in Murray Hall, Room 101. If any of your banking information is incorrect, please call Payroll immediately at 732-445-3057. Please see Carol Spry if you have any questions about your paychecks. Please note that all employees are eligible to open bank accounts at the Rutgers Federal Credit Union. Making Changes: PTLs and TA Associates should also see Carol Spry for any changes they wish to make in their benefits, insurance forms, and W-4 forms. TAs from the English Department should see Cheryl Robinson. When: If you completed your payroll paperwork before August 17, you will receive the first paycheck on September 7th and in two-week intervals thereafter. New hires sometimes will not receive their first paychecks until the second pay cycle. If you have not completed your payroll paperwork, please see Carol Spry. PTLs receive checks for the Fall semester from September 1st to January 31st, regardless of the beginning and ending dates of their employment.
UNIVERSITY IDENTIFICATION (RUCONNECTION CARD)We encourage you to get the RUconnection Card as soon as you have received your first paycheck. (For most instructors, this will be September 7.) Besides confirming your affiliation with Rutgers, the RUconnection Card is your passport to Rutgers’ libraries and recreational facilities. Simply visit the RUconnection Card at the following location between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and the friendly staff will assist you: University Human Resources, Administrative Services Bldg II, Cook Campus For more information, visit http://uhr.rutgers.edu/misc/RUConnection.htm. PARKINGDuring orientation, you will receive a temporary parking permit (valid through September 30). A permanent permit may be purchased online at http://rudots.rutgers.edu after you have received your first paycheck. The permit enables you to park in all common faculty staff parking lots, but does not guarantee an actual parking space, and lots fill up early in the day. Leave yourself time before your class to find a space. Please see Carol Spry to obtain a parking gate key card for a $5 fee. For more information on parking, you can visit http://parktran.rutgers.edu. Mailboxes: Every instructor has a mailbox on the College Avenue Campus in Murray 101. In addition, instructors on the Livingston, Busch and Douglass/Cook campuses will have mailboxes on their teaching campuses. First day writing samples and rosters will be distributed to the mailbox on the campus where you are teaching, as will most important announcements. Please check your campus mailbox often; important departmental memos, rosters, etc. that need your attention will appear there. Also, through this mailbox you will be informed about your students who have registered for tutoring. Please do not leave valuables in your mailboxes; books and other valuables are regularly stolen from the mailrooms. Mailbox locations:
Receiving Packages: When you receive a package in Murray Hall, a slip will be placed in your mailbox by Yvette Jones. Yvette will secure your package in the Xerox Room (MU 110).
OFFICESFull-time instructors, part-time lecturers, and TAs share offices on each of the respective campuses. Office space has become increasingly limited; space may not be available for more than office hours. Instructors must sign up for these offices on a first-come, first-serve basis. All buildings are smoke-free environments. Lock-outs: If you lock yourself out of your office, please see the Writing Program staff on your campus to arrange to have you let back into your office. If lock-out occurs after 4:30 p.m., please call campus security (2-7211). You will need to show your RU ID to regain admittance to your office. On College Avenue Campus: Offices are located in Murray Hall. Key pads will replace the current door locks on shared offices in Murray Hall, which will render any keys from previous semesters ineffective. Sign-up schedules will be posted on the doors of Murray 013, 019, 026, 027, 028, 035, 036A, 036B, 036C, and 036D beginning August 27th. Instructors may choose an office and time slot that will become permanent for the remainder of the semester. For every section you teach, you may sign up for up to 1 ½ hours weekly. Any times scheduled during this period will be listed as your official office hours. Space is first-come, first-serve, so please arrive early to get your choice of offices. The deadline for sign-up is September 7th. After September 7th, you will receive an email providing the entry code for the office you have selected. Please anticipate that you will not have access to your office during the first week of classes. We apologize for the inconvenience, but ask for your patience as we implement the new system. Additional offices are located at 36 Union Street and 43 Mine Street. You must see Quionne Matchett if you wish to be assigned to Union St. and Mine St. offices; she will supply you with the keys for those offices. 36 Union Street/43 Mine Street: If your office is at 36 Union Street or 43 Mine Street, you need to be aware of possible security problems with these buildings (particularly on Union Street). We are the only occupants of these two buildings and have sole responsibility for keeping the buildings safe. Please make certain that you close and lock all windows and doors before leaving the building. Please check that the bathroom window is firmly closed and locked when you leave. If you use 36 Union Street at night, please be especially careful entering and exiting the building. If you feel unsafe, please contact campus security (2-7211) for assistance. On Douglass Campus: Offices are located in the Douglass Writing Program Building at 135 George Street. There are sign-up sheets to reserve common office space, with no keys. Romana Uhlirova will provide additional information about how and when to sign up for use of these spaces. On Livingston Campus: Offices are located in Lucy Stone Hall B106. There are sign-up sheets to reserve common office space, with no keys. Emma Rumen will provide additional information about how and when to sign up for use of these spaces. CONTACT INFORMATIONOffice Phone Number and Location: After you select an office, please update your new information so that the students receive the correct contact information when they call RU Info or use the "Search Rutgers" feature on the university's website. To do this, please visit: https://www.acs.rutgers.edu/facaddupdt/. Please be sure that your direct office number at Rutgers is listed as your "primary campus phone number." Please also update your "Bldg #" and "Room #." (Murray Hall is Bldg# 3011 and Mine Street is #3141. The website will provide a link for you to find the codes for other buildings.) Also, please make sure your email address is listed; due to your limited office hours, we encourage students to contact you by email. Home Address: Please make sure that this information is correct in the system, as well. However, if you move, you will need to alert numerous offices that your address has changed. Please make sure that you inform both the Writing Program and Carol Spry. If you are a graduate student, please also inform the graduate office in your department and the graduate school itself. SAFETY AND SECURITYMurray Hall and other University buildings have been the scenes of numerous acts of vandalism and theft over the past several years. We can all contribute to making both the buildings and the campus safer by reporting any suspicious activity to the Campus Police at 2-7211. In case of an emergency, call 911. We recommend that you lock your office, even if only stepping out for a few minutes. (A wallet was recently stolen during a fifteen minute interval when the occupant was out of her office.) We also recommend that valuables be secured out of sight: purses, cell phones, laptops, PDAs all make for inviting targets and are best kept out of public view when not in use. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT RESOURCESPHOTOCOPYINGMurray Hall: The department's copying services operate 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. If you need to make copies beyond operating hours, you must obtain a code for the coded lock from Gail Nadonley in room 109. (The lock code is the same as your Xerox machine code.) The department's copying services are meant to help you with supplementary course materials; accordingly, for those teaching literature courses, we ask you to limit copying to 25 pages of duplicated materials per student per semester; for those teaching courses in the Writing Program, the copy limit is 1200 copies per course. Copying that exceeds this limit must be passed on to the students at a cost of 5 cents per page. Instructors who anticipate exceeding this limit should see Zelda Ralph in MU 118C to learn the procedures for collecting copying fees from students. All copy jobs of two or more pages will be done back-to-back. Examinations can be exempted from this rule by special request. Place all requests for duplicating for both undergraduate and graduate courses in the box labeled Department Xeroxing in the mail room. Please fill out and attach a work order form (available in the mail room). Material to be copied should be submitted at least 24 hours before it is needed. Copying from books takes a minimum of 72 hours, so please plan accordingly. For further information about copying services and procedures, please consult with Yvette Jones in MU 110. Douglass, Livingston, and Busch Campuses: Instructors on every campus are encouraged to use the copying services in Murray Hall. However, copy machines are also available at Douglass, Livingston, and Busch for small runs. The staff on those campuses will provide more detailed information about those services INTERNET AND COMPUTER INFORMATIONMailing Lists and Internet Access: Increasingly, the Writing Program carries out its official business through electronic communication. Accordingly, we ask that all teachers in our program maintain an email account. If you have not previously provided the program with an email address, please make sure you do so, since the various program mailing lists are the primary means of memo distribution. Please check frequently the email account you have provided to Rutgers. For teachers of 101, the 101 course list will be used to notify you of all important information. We also hope you will use it as a forum for discussing the challenges you encounter teaching 101. We ask that you reserve it for issues related to our class and that you abstain from using the listserv to promote political or personal issues (there are any number of other forums for that, and we all already receive too much email). You will receive information on the mailing list, including how to post to the list, early in the semester via email. RCI Accounts/ NET IDs: All Rutgers University employees are entitled to Internet access through the Research Computing Initiative (RCI) once they are in the Rutgers system. For information on creating your account (or Net ID), visit http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/rci-accts.html. RCI accounts are needed, in particular, if you would like to use one of the three computer classrooms maintained by the Writing Program. Computer Access: All instructor offices are equipped with computers that have web access, with the exception of Livingston, where we invite instructors to use the instructor’s computer station or the computer lab (when it is not being used for a class). All campus libraries have computers with internet access, and all student centers and libraries (as well as a number of other locations) have wireless internet access for those with wireless-enabled laptops and Net ID. In addition, once you have a Net ID, you can use any of the computer labs on the Rutgers campuses. For information on these labs and their locations, see the New Brunswick Computing Services website athttp://nbcs.rutgers.edu. To log on to the computers in Murray Hall, please use the log-in “English” and click the “Workstation only” box. The password is “English.” Please save your documents to a disk, flash drive, or email. Networked Printing: All shared computers in Murray Hall have been linked to a printer in MU 110 (Xerox Room). Please make only one copy of your work and limit your printing to course-related materials; should you need additional copies, please use the departmental copying services. We are doing our best to maintain this free service and depend on your voluntary compliance with this request. Computer Support: Russell Clarke manages the department's network and is responsible for providing technical support to the Writing Program's three computer classrooms, the department's administrative staff, and to the faculty. Russell and the two other members of his staff – Joe Philips and Maritza Cruz – support users on three different campuses and work together to maintain more than two hundred machines. Should you require computer support, please visit https://secure.fas.rutgers.edu/apps/workorder/ and fill out the “Online Technical Support Request” form. Should your computer difficulties make visiting the website impossible, please fill out the paper copy of the "Online Technical Support Request” form included with this packet and place it in Russell Clarke's mailbox. Additional copies of this form can be found in the mail room. Russell can assist you in making your decisions about computer purchases and software upgrades. To set up an appointment with Russell to discuss these matters, please contact him at 2-1148, 2-6509, or at russell.clarke@rutgers.edu. COMMON ROOMS & MEETING SPACES ON COLLEGE AVENUEEnglish Common Room (MU 101A): This public space is open to all members of the department and so we must insist that no office hours be scheduled in the Common Room. The Common Room can, however, be reserved for special events by contacting Quionne Matchett. The Common Room is now equipped with a coded lock. All faculty members, PTLs, TAs, and Instructors will be able to gain access to the room with a special code. Please see Gail Nadonley in MU 109 for your code information. The normal hours of operation for the Common Room are 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. After 5:00, you will need to use your access code to gain entry to the room. If you are the last person to leave the room, please make sure all windows are closed and lights are turned off. Coffee and tea are available in the Common Room for a nominal fee. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep this room clean throughout the day. Please make a special point of removing your trash and cleaning up whatever mess is created when you make your coffee or tea. Graduate Conference Room (MU 118A): The graduate conference room is available for meetings of departmental committees, advising, oral exams, and dissertation defenses. The conference room also houses copies of completed dissertations. Those interested in reserving the room should contact Cheryl Robinson. Plangere Conference Room (MU 305): This conference room is primarily used for the Writing Program's staff meetings and training sessions. It may also be reserved for special departmental events and meetings, as long as these do not conflict with the ongoing work of the Plangere Writing Center. Those interested in reserving the Plangere Conference Room should contact the Plangere Writing Center Administrative Assistant, at 2-1149. Plangere Writing Center Annex (MU 302): This space is used for overflow tutoring during the Writing Center's busiest times. When it doesn't conflict with the work of the Plangere Writing Center, this space also serves as the primary place for holding faculty meetings, departmental lectures, and job talks. Those interested in reserving the Annex should contact the Plangere Writing Center Administrative Assistant, at 2-1149. BOOK ORDERSAll book orders for Writing Program courses are handled by Judy Karwowski (2-7570, judy.karwowski@rutgers.edu). Instructors are not responsible for placing orders with Judy or the bookstore. SUPPLIESThe Department provides stationery, yellow pads, pencils, and manila folders, as needed. Please only take what you require for immediate use; we have the resources to handle reasonable demand on these supplies. If no one stockpiles, we should be able to get through the year without difficulty. These supplies are stored in the Xerox Room (MU 110) and managed by Yvette Jones. If you need something that we don’t have, Yvette will place an order for you. LOST AND FOUNDThe lost and found for Murray Hall is located in MU 107. Staff there can be reached at 732-932-9695.
