Because the colleges of Rutgers University require students to pass at
least one expository writing class, and sometimes more, students should
be sure to understand how registration works for Writing Program classes.
Upon entering the university, all students, except University College
and transfer students, are automatically registered in writing courses
based on their performance on the placement exam. University College students
and transfer students should call the Counseling Office at 732-932-8093
to learn the results of their respective placement tests and how to register
for a course at the appropriate level.
Students may register for Writing courses via the Rutgers
Touchtone Telephone Registration System or online using the Rutgers
Web Registration System (WEBREG).
On the first day of writing classes, students will be asked to respond
to a short question in writing. The instructor will then use this writing
sample to make certain that students' placements are correct. If the
instructor concludes that a student needs to move into another writing
course, the student will need to drop the current course and add the new
course. In this case, she or he must go to one of the Add/Drop centers
located on College Avenue, Livingston, or Douglass, and speak to a representative
of the Writing Program who will locate open sections of the new course.
