Writing Program FAQs: Registration

How do I register for a Writing course?

In the first semester of their first year, all entering students, except transfer students and those enrolled in University College, are automatically registered in writing courses based on their performance on the SATs and the Rutgers University Placement Test: Level 1 exam. University College students and transfer students receive instructions from their colleges about the results of their placement tests and how to register for a course at the appropriate level.

Students may register for writing courses online using the Rutgers Web Registration System, "WEBREG." For access to this system, go to the "WEBREG" section of the Rutgers Registration Information Page. Students may also register for writing courses using the Rutgers Touchtone Telephone Registration System. For more information about this system, go to the Rutgers Registration Information Page.

If you find that you are registered for a course at the wrong level (that is, at a course above or below your original placement or for a course where you have not fulfilled the prerequisites), during the Add/Drop period you need to go to the Writing Program office on the campus the course you need to drop or change is offered.

College Avenue: The Learning Resource Center, located behind Brower Commons near the post office.

Douglass: Douglass Student Center, 2nd Floor.

Livingston: Blumberg Auditorium, located in the A wing of Lucy Stone Hall.

University College students can also go to the University College Office of Counseling in Miller Hall, College Avenue Campus, between 4:30 and 8:00 PM.

Writing Program FAQs: Registration

What do I do if I pre-registered for a course and then failed the pre-requisite course? Should I stay in the higher-level course and do my best?

If you've failed a pre-requisite course, you cannot get credit for the required course until you have passed the pre-requisite. Thus, for instance, if you were placed in 100 in the Fall and pre-registered for 101 in the Spring, you would not get credit for taking 101 in the Spring if you failed 100 in the Fall, even if you ended up passing the 101 course in the Spring. So, if you find yourself pre-registered for a course for which you have not successfully fulfilled the pre-requisites, you should drop the higher course and add the lower level course. In order to do this, you will need to speak with the Dean of your college to get a special permission number to drop.
