The
New Humanities Reader Comes to Expos 101, So Expos 101 Students
Don't Buy Your Book Until You've Met Your Teacher!
The
Writing Program is pleased to announce the introduction of a new
reader for the Expos 101 course. The New Humanities Reader,
edited by Richard E. Miller and Kurt Spellmeyer, continues in the
pedagogical tradition of Ways of Reading, the reader that
the Writing Program has used for over twelve years: The New Humanities
Reader includes challenging essays by writers from a wide range
of disciplines and it asks students to write essays that work with
more than one reading at a time.
The
New Humanities Reader brings together readings that invite students
to rethink what the role of the humanities might be in the 21st
century. Defining the humanities broadly as the human dimension
of all knowledge, The New Humanities Reader provides readings
and writing assignments that ask Expos 101 students to engage with
some of the most pressing issues of the day: the future of work
in the age of technology; globalization and global change; the value
of education in a changing world; the ongoing conflict between scientific
and spiritual ways of knowing. We believe that all liberally educated
students should be in a position to participate in discussions of
these issues. Our hope is that The New Humanities Reader
will enrich these discussions, encouraging all students to see the
role that reading and writing play in forming vibrant intellectual
communities.
During
this transitional period, there will be sections of Expos 101 that
assign The New Humanities Reader and there will be other
sections of Expos 101 that assign Ways of Reading, 5th Edition.
If you are a student entering Expos 101, you should not buy your
book until you've attended class: your teacher will tell you whether
to buy The New Humanities Reader or Ways of Reading.
All Expos 101 classes will continue to have the same grading criteria
and to require the same number of essays. To learn more about the
Expos 101 course and its requirements, go to the Expos
101 Course Home Page.
