Survival Guide

We know that many issues outside of academics can interfere with your success in the classroom. During the semester, you may encounter things as serious as illness or as mundane as problematic bus schedules. To help you survive these problems, we offer you the following set of links to both academic help and student services.

Tutoring and Academic Assistance

• Writing Center Tutoring from the Writing Program. The Writing Centers offer help specifically tailored to Writing Program classes.

• Learning Resource Centers (LRCs) provide tutoring and study skills services, workshops, and course support for all Rutgers University students. 

• PALS: The Program in American Language Studies at Rutgers University offers short courses that prepare non-native speakers of English for academic and professional work in American English, and for successful adjustment to life in the United States. PALS classes are designed to prepare international students for university, community college, or technical school matriculation. PALS also serves community members who wish to improve their English language skills.

Counseling Services

• Cook College Counseling Center is located in the Cook Campus Center.

• Douglass College Counseling provides services for Douglass students and a wonderful collection of useful numbers for all students.

• Livingston College Counseling Center is located in Tillett Hall, Room 247.

• Rutgers College Counseling is directed at students at Rutgers College. 

• Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance offers support to crime victims,survivors, and other members of the university community through advocacy, crisis intervention, short-term counseling, education and referrals.

• Campus Ministries provides links to faith-based counseling for all students.

• Bishop House / Student Services this is where you go if you're concerned that a personal problem is affecting your academics.

Health and Safety Concerns

• Anxiety Disorders, a pamphlet from Student Health Services, gives you strategies for coping with extreme anxiety. 

• Disabled Students Concerns links to the Division of Student Affairs Office of Compliance and Student Policy Concerns

• National Institute of Mental Health web site offers great information for the public on dealing with psychological disorders.

• Plain Talk about Stress is a pamphlet from NIMH that offers coping strategies when times get tough.

• Rutgers Student Health Services offers information and links to all the health services available to students.

Computer Services

• Campus Computing Facilities describes the main twelve computer labs in the New Brusnwick area.

• E-mail at Rutgers is a useful guide to establishing an e-mail account.

• New Brunswick Computing Services is the place to go to establish an account on "eden," the main student server for the New Brunswick campus. 

• Rutgers University Computing Services (RUCS) is the umbrella organization of all computing services at the University.

• Livingston Bookstore is located on Joyce Kilmer Road on the Livingston Campus.

• New Jersey Books is one of the main competitors of the Rutgers University Bookstore, located near the intersection of College Avenue and Somerset Street.

• The Rutgers University Bookstore at One Penn Plaza in downtown New Brunswick (246-8448).

• The Student Cooperative Store is located on the Cook / Douglass campuses, at the corner of Lipman Drive and Nichol Avenue.
