The Hybrid Expository Writing Course

In the Fall of 2007, the Writing Program is pleased to be opening up new opportunities for taking Expository Writing, as we are launching six Hybrids (marked in the course catalogue as 355:101:"A1, A2, M1, M2, A5, A6"). What this means is that once each week of the semester, the class will meet on campus – with two classes meeting at College Avenue, two at Douglass, and two at Busch – and the remainder of the week the class will meet asynchronously - at your convenience - online.

The Hybrid classes will remain exactly the same as all other Expository Writing courses in terms of course content, but will differ only in that they will take place within two environments: the campus classroom, and the online setting. Class activities will be distributed over the two environments, according to what is deemed most appropriate for which setting. The Hybrid classes will be taught by expert teachers, all of whom will have been specially trained to teach in this innovative way.

What the Hybrid Expos Course Offers You:

  • An opportunity to study in both environments – on campus and online – therefore giving you the best of both worlds

  • Flexibility and convenience: having an online component allows you to be reflective and log on to class whenever you have a brilliant idea or inspiration

  • Increased opportunities for writing practice, since in the online component all your responses are text-based

  • Great opportunities for collaboration, as the 24x7 online environment gives you plenty of chances for reading each other’s responses, and working together

  • A chance to make use of your computer, a tool you most likely enjoy and use frequently, in a fun educational setting

What You will Need:

  • Use of a computer with Internet access

  • To be an independent and responsible learner, as you will need to be self-motivated and conscientious so as to log on to the online component a minimum of twice per week.

  • An adventurous spirit!
