Course Description - 100 & 100RIntroduction, Required Texts, Basic Requirements, Standard Policies | 100 & 100R Basic Composition comprises two 100-level writing courses offered at Rutgers: English 100 and English 100R. These courses prepare students for English 101, Expository Writing. Students have been placed into one of these 100-level courses through a combination of their SAT scores and Rutgers University placement tests, or by successful completion of English 098 or EAD II. English 100 (Basic Composition) is a 3 college-credit course that meets twice a week; students are evaluated on the basis of a letter grade. At the end of the semester, students must receive a grade of “C” or above in order to pass the course and enter Expository Writing (101). English 100R (Basic Composition with Reading) is a 4.5 credit course that meets three times a week: 3 of these credits are college-credits and count towards graduation; the remaining 1.5 are E-credits, which appear on the transcript and count toward a student’s full-time status, but do not count toward graduation. Students placed in 100R—as opposed to 100—require additional practice with reading comprehension as shown by their reading placement test scores. Roughly one-third of the course, the equivalent of that 3rd day a week of class time, will be spent focusing on reading comprehension (the “R” of 100R). As with 100, students are evaluated on the basis of a letter grade and must earn a “C” or above in order to pass the course and enter Expository Writing (101). In addition, they must pass the “R” portion of the course (099), graded pass/fail, which has focused on reading comprehension. For an explanation of 099, as well as specific resources for students in 100R, see the 100R section of the 100 Course Homepage. Students must enroll in an "R" section of English 100 (Basic Composition) if:
Teachers who are teaching a section of 100R: your class will meet three times a week, and you should consult the additional 100R course description. Teachers who are teaching a numbered section of 100 in the 2-day a week format: please make sure, early in the first week of the semester, that there are no students in your class who are required to enroll in 099. |
