100R and 099 Explained100R is a course which combines English 100 (also known as Basic Composition) and Reading for English 100, usually called 099. Together they are known as 100R. The "R" part of 100R, called "099," is designed to help students practice their reading skills in conjunction with their writing skills. In order to allow for this reading work, there is an extra day of class per week. This page explains the difference between 100 and 100R. It also gives the Requirements and Policies for 099 and the Grading Criteria for 099, below. Students enrolled in English 100R should also read the information on English 100. NOTE: "R" courses are listed in the course catalogues as 100:RA, 100:RB, etc. Non-R sections are numbered, e.g. 100:12. Students must enroll in an "R" section of English 100 if:
English 100R meets three times a week. In this course description, purely for convenience, the reading component of 100R will be called 099.
