English for Academic Discourse II (356:156), or EAD II, serves matriculated non-native English speaking or bilingual undergraduates. It is a 4-credit university course that meets three times a week and counts toward the GPA. EAD I introduces students to critical reading and writing, and EAD II strengthens those skills. EAD II is specifically designed to help students build linguistic competence in English so that their verbal level more accurately reflects their ability to read, conceptualize, and frame complex arguments in English. Rutgers recognizes how difficult it is to write fluently in a second language at this level of complexity, and for this reason EAD II students are awarded 4 credits.
In EAD II, the focus is on the ability to respond to complex academic texts. Through revisions of their papers and critical reading of the texts, students will practice taking part in a conversation with intellectual rigor and academic integrity.
